San Bernardino County Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., who also serves as the newly elected Vice President of the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA), joined residents, community leaders, and project partners on Saturday to celebrate the long-awaited completion of the Mt. Vernon Avenue Bridge Project.

First built in 1934, the Mt. Vernon Bridge has been a critical connection between the west and central sides of San Bernardino. The newly completed bridge provides a safer and wider structure, modern pedestrian and bicycle access, and enhanced traffic flow to better serve the needs of residents for decades to come.

“SBCTA is truly honored to have played a role in delivering this critical transportation project to the residents of the City of San Bernardino and surrounding communities.  The replacement of the nearly 100-year-old bridge will ensure that the Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge continues to safely bring residents together long into the future”, said SBCTA Board President Rick Denison.

The $244 million project was made possible through federal, state, and local funding partnerships, and supported hundreds of local jobs during construction. Beyond improving mobility, the bridge is expected to strengthen economic opportunity by creating easier access for residents and businesses on both sides of the city.

Supervisor Baca spoke at the ribbon cutting, underscoring the importance of the project for local families and businesses. “The Mt. Vernon Bridge is more than a roadway, it’s a lifeline that connects our community,” said Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. “With this new bridge, residents will have a more reliable way to get to work, school, and local businesses. This project is a true investment in the quality of life for the people of San Bernardino.”

With construction complete, the Mt. Vernon Bridge is now officially open to the public, serving as a symbol of collaboration and progress for the San Bernardino community.
