San Bernardino County Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. hosted his 6th Annual Backpack Giveaway this week at Monterey Elementary School, ensuring every student on campus began the new school year prepared for success with a brand-new backpack filled with school supplies, along with socks and a T-shirt.
In addition to providing essential back-to-school items to more than 350 students, Supervisor Baca presented Monterey Elementary School with a $5,000 donation to further support educational opportunities and student success throughout the school year.
Located in one of San Bernardino’s highest-need neighborhoods, Monterey Elementary serves a community where many families face significant economic challenges. By bringing the annual backpack giveaway directly to the school, Supervisor Baca helped ease the financial burden on parents while ensuring every student had the tools needed to start the school year with confidence and dignity.
“As a former educator, I know that having the right school supplies can make a real difference in a child’s confidence and success,” said Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. “Every student deserves to start the school year prepared, and I’m proud to support our families by helping ensure our children have the tools they need to thrive.”
This year’s event brought together numerous San Bernardino County departments and community partners to connect families with valuable services and resources, including public health information, educational programs, and community support services. Students and their families also had the opportunity to meet first responders, explore public safety vehicles, and learn more about the essential services available throughout the County. These connections help ensure families have access to the resources they need beyond the first day of school.
Monterey Elementary School expressed its gratitude. “We are incredibly thankful to Supervisor Baca for his continued investment in our students and families,” said Vice Principal Ansari. “His generosity and commitment to our school community help ensure our students begin the year feeling prepared, supported, and excited to learn. This event truly makes a meaningful difference for our families.”
Supervisor Baca was joined by representatives from the San Bernardino City Unified School District, who joined in demonstrating their shared commitment to supporting students, strengthening families, and investing in educational success throughout the community.
Now in its sixth year, Supervisor Baca’s Annual Backpack Giveaway has become a cherished Fifth District tradition, reflecting his ongoing commitment to expanding educational opportunities, promoting equity, and ensuring every child has the support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
