This year, we recognized several incredible individuals across the Fifth District for their service to our country and our communities. Each year, Supervisor Baca honors local veterans to highlight their bravery, sacrifice, and continued impact here at home.
This recognition is deeply personal for Supervisor Baca — his father, uncles, and grandfather all served in the U.S. military, shaping his lifelong respect and commitment to those who have answered the call to serve.
“Honoring our veterans is personal to me. Many of my family members have served and their sacrifice reminds me that our veterans deserve more than thanks — they deserve lasting support and recognition,” said Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr.

Mr. Barber is a proud Marine Corps Veteran who continues his service beyond the uniform. He is an active member of the San Bernardino Disabled American Veterans and the founder of Mission Fish, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Veterans through community, connection, and the healing power of fishing.
Mission Fish gives Veterans a chance to come together, build camaraderie, and enjoy the outdoors — creating a supportive space where they can decompress, share stories, and experience the peace that comes from being on the water.

Carlos and Maria Marquez, Rialto
Carlos and Maria Marquez are a proud military couple who have both served our country — Carlos in the U.S. Marine Corps and Maria in the U.S. Army. Their shared commitment to service is what brought them together, and during their active duty they traveled across the country, representing the strength and sacrifice of our Armed Forces.
Carlos has since retired from military service, while Maria continues her dedication to others through her work with the San Bernardino Community Action Partnership, where she serves local families and uplifts our community every day.

John Petersen, Bloomington
Mr. Petersen is a proud Bloomington native and graduate of Bloomington High School. Nominated by his daughter, he is recognized not only for his service to our country but also for his lifelong pride in the community he calls home.
Straight out of high school, Mr. Petersen began his military journey working on aircrafts — a role that allowed him to travel to places few have ever seen.

Jeffrey Feller, Rosena Ranch
Mr. Feller, a New York native, proudly served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force before continuing his commitment to public service as a San Bernardino County Probation Officer and later as a Federal Agent. He was even honored at Yankee Stadium for his military service — a testament to his lifelong dedication to protecting others in both military and civilian life.
