Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. visited Joe Baca Middle School on November 3rd, to celebrate the completion of a brand-new 6,156 square foot mini-pitch soccer field, along with a new decomposed granite walking track and upgraded LED field lighting.
The $1.9 million investment was made possible through a partnership between the County of San Bernardino and the Colton Joint Unified School District, with funding support that included $1.15 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Students welcomed the new addition with excitement, including 8th-grade student Kayla, who shared, “My classmates and I love playing on this field and we’re grateful to Supervisor Baca for bringing this investment to our school. It’s great to know that our local leaders support us.”
CJUSD Superintendent Frank Miranda praised the project as a model of effective collaboration. “We’re very grateful to Supervisor Baca for his continued support of our students and schools,” said Superintendent Miranda. “Investments like this remind our young people that their community believes in them —and their future.”
During the site visit, Supervisor Baca toured the facility, spoke with students and faculty, and even joined a friendly game on the court. “This $1.9 million investment is more than just a field — it’s an investment in our youth, their physical and mental well-being, and their future,” said Supervisor Baca. “Our goal is to ensure that every child in our community has access to quality spaces where they can dream big, stay healthy, and feel proud of where they come from.” In addition to the project funding, Supervisor Baca also presented the school with a $2,000 contribution to support student activities and campus needs.
Designed to expand recreational access and promote youth wellness, the new field will serve as a shared space for physical education, after-school programs, and community-building activities.
