San Bernardino, CA – San Bernardino County, in partnership with the City of San Bernardino, is proud to announce the activation of a new HAWK signal at the intersection of 5th Street and Pedley Road, near Monterey Elementary School. This $888,000 investment underscores the commitment to public safety and infrastructure improvements. “This project is about keeping our kids safe,” said Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr. “We’re committed to making our community safer, and this traffic signal is an important step in that direction.”

The crossing at 5th and Pedley is 75 feet wide, making it challenging for pedestrians, especially with vehicles often exceeding the 25-mph school zone speed limit. During school drop-off and pick-up times, about 80% of drivers are speeding, which puts children at risk. “We know that safe, reliable infrastructure is critical in ensuring that our students and families feel secure as they walk or bike to school,” said Superintendent Mauricio Arellano, San Bernardino City Unified. This new traffic light is a vital step in addressing the concerns that have been raised through research done by the County’s Public Works Department.”

The installation of the HAWK or High – intensity Activated Crosswalk signal reflects the County and City’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the well-being of its residents.

“This is an important milestone for our city, it enhances the safety of our streets, especially for our youngest residents,” Mayor Helen Tran, City of San Bernardino.
